I have been with my boyfriend, Michael, for over three years now; I moved in with him in the autumn of 2011. Surrounded by green fields and lots of animals 'our' house is comfortable and homely and I knew I would fit right in! Michael is a dairy farmer and currently milks 45 cows. Although I spent most weekends and every summer on my grandparents farm in Co. Galway I had no experience of dairy farming. It can be tough work but it also has its rewards. I have learned a lot during my time here so far; Michael is striving to be the best he can and he puts a colossal amount of work into his livelihood both physical and mental; in this modern era it pays to include technology in your work whether it is through networking with other farmers or constantly inputting data so you and others benefit.
There was an open day in Moorepark (a research farm in Co. Cork) recently which we both attended. It was reassuring to know that we are well on the path that they have been successfully following for a while now. So if we both continue to work hard we should be rewarded with an enjoyable lifestyle.
I have always loved animals and I love to be outside in the fresh air as much as I can. At the moment I still work in my home village of Killimor as a pharmacy assistant. I hadn't planned on ending up here but it happened. Whilst it is paying the bills (mostly my credit card!) I cannot see myself staying here forever and I am open to playing a more active role on the farm in the future.
